Chemical Engineering Jobs in HPCL

Disclaimer: This might not be the same procedure that they are using, but I am providing general information here.
There are three main divisions of employees in HPCL when it comes to employing a chemical engineering graduate. They are
  1. Operational
  2. Technical
  3. Administration
Operational division deals with on field works like operation of units and control room functions. Technical division handles the operation data and works with data analysis. Administration division as you know comprises of senior engineers who are adept in management.
So you can select one of the above as your area of interest and research further in that to know more.
To get a job in HPCL, you need to
  • Have a good GPA in your B.Tech or B.E. in Chemical Engineering and Qualify GATE within first 100 ranks (for a general category student) OR Be a student in a reputed College like that of IITs or NITs for an on campus selection through a written test.
  • Once you are through your GATE or campus written test, then you will be called for a Group Task followed by a Personal Interview or directly to the Personal Interview.

Group Task
Group Tasks are generally given to a random group of person (usually based on their reservation category or branch of specialization or selected operation) to judge a participant's interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. This also helps check a participant's capability to outstand in a group while adapting to the group's code of conduct.
You will be assigned to a group, the group decides leader, the problem is given, the logic is applied and the solution is found. Now the key point is how the solution is found.
The recruitment team will be looking for three kinds of group members
  1. Active member
  2. Passive member
  3. Projective member
The active members are those who interact, are creative with their ideas, encourage other members to come forward with their ideas, do a dedicated logical reasoning to find out a solution and have generally good rapport with most of the group members. These are the ones who are preferred for employment.
The passive members just stay shut, depend on others for their ideas, don't participate in group discussions and never volunteer anything. These are deemed not suitable for the employment.
The projective members are the ones who volunteer a lot, are hyperactive, steal other's ideas and act like they know everything. There is a very good chance that these persons don't get selected at all. But they might be selected if the recruitment team finds some redeeming qualities in them. These are always preferred than passive members.
Usually the questions asked will be on economics, optimization and design. Sometimes marketability and rating might also be asked. The question is usually a logical one and not bookish. All you need is thinking out of box and thinking from both consumer and seller point of view.
You don't need to show sophisticated language fluency skills or act superior to others in your group. You should have audible, with clear accent, engaging attitude, encouraging nature and not too selfish mentality. Consider your team as your family and assign them tasks you think best suited if you are the team lead. If someone else is selected as the leader, don't hold grudge against him/her and just work for the overall good of the group.
Remember, group's success will be your success.

Personal Interview

In the Personal Interview section, you will be asked questions regarding both technical knowledge and your personal background.

Technical Knowledge will naturally be on Petroleum Technology and in general on Topics like Mass and Heat Transfer and Unit Operations regarding Petroleum Industry. Learn Basic Mass and Heat Transfer operations that are employed in Refineries along with a little of Reservoir Engineering. Highlight your subjects that are related to Petroleum technologies.

On the personal background front, try answering honestly. Highlight your mini-projects or internships, showcasing your industry training backgrounds and impressing on them your zeal and interest in joining petroleum companies.

What does it Take to be a Chemical Engineer?

Chemical Engineering is essentially a mix of four primary engineering fields - Mechanical + Civil + Electronics + Computers. We study physics, chemistry, mathematics, arts and a little bit of history in chemical engineering. We develop computer codes for controlling our equipment and carrying out reactions. We estimate costs and analyse profits for constructing a functional plant. So consider opting for chemical engineering only if you have good basics in math, physics and chemistry and a flair for drawing. A strong foundation is required to build a good building. And to be a good chemical engineer you need to have some good grip on basic sciences first. 1.     Know your math  - learn integrations, differentiations and transformations. Math is important especially in Fluid Mechanics, Mass Transfer, Process Dynamics and Control, Thermodynamics and Chemical Reaction Engineering. 2.     Know your chemistry  - learn periodic table. Chemical Engineering - Say Hello and Know More!!

Hello! Welcome, to all my dear Chemical Engineers and the rest of the readers who are curious about knowing what Chemical Engineering is all about. Chemical Engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It is the past, present and future of Engineering and  Chemical Engineering is the most basic of art, science and technology.  Actually, in your day-to-day life, your mornings start with your using the products prepared by a chemical engineer. Toothpaste - whatever those ayurvedic and organic stuff say, the base for a toothpaste is prepared chemically and involves abrasives, minerals and surfactants that are manufactured in chemical industries. Coffee Powder - Leaching followed by spray drying are used in Coffee Powder preparation, which I am sure you would agree are Chemical Engineering Operations. Milk - You would be surprised to know that Dairy Industry is a part and parcel of Chemical Industries. Milk powder preparation involves spray or freeze dr...
